It’s been an incredible journey seeing the talented young girls in our braiding class grow and refine their skills! 💪🏾✨ Their dedication and passion inspire me every day, and I’m so proud of how far they’ve come.

Did you know that braids once served as a survival tool? During the transatlantic slave trade, enslaved Africans braided rice and seeds into their hair—ensuring they had food for the unknown journey ahead.
These braids were more than just a style; they were maps, messages, and a means of survival. They carried culture, resilience, and resistance. Many of the rice-growing techniques that shaped agriculture in the Americas came from the hands of these very people.
Braiding is not just a trend—it’s history, strength, and legacy. ✊🏾

1. Part the Hair: Use a rat-tail comb to divide hair into two equal sections.
2. Start Braiding: Take a small section at the front of one side, split it into three, and begin a braid.
• Dutch Braid: Cross strands under the middle.
• French Braid: Cross strands over the middle.
3. Add Hair: Keep adding small sections as you braid down.
4. Secure the Ends: Tie with a hairband.
5. Repeat on the Other Side: Match the braid on the second section.
6. Finish: Smooth with edge control or mousse.

A special thank you to our volunteers, to St Marks and to all the Black owned businesses who came and provided some activities ! 🤎🤎🤎

Today was absolutely beautiful!
The energy, the joy, the creativity—it was all flowing! My students truly amazed me with their imaginative arts and crafts. Watching them bring their ideas to life reminded me just how powerful creativity can be in a child’s world.
I let go and joined in, becoming a little child myself—laughing, crafting, and just being in the moment. It’s days like this that remind me why I do what I do. The laughter, the spark in their eyes, the sense of pride when they finished their creations—it was priceless.
I’m so thankful for the gift of being able to pour into the next generation through fun, love, and learning.
